This Transgender Pro Boxer Just Made History

Patricio "Pat" Manuel was unanimously ruled the victor in his debut professional match.

America's first trans male professional boxer is celebrating a historic victory in the ring.

This Saturday, 33-year-old Patricio "Pat" Manuel won his debut pro match against Mexican fighter Hugo Aguilar at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA. The match was over in 12 minutes, reports The Los Angeles Times, and judges unanimously ruled Manuel the victor.

This weekend's win was the culmination of years of struggles on Manuel's part: In 2012, the pro boxer fought in the Olympic trials as a woman. (A shoulder injury forced him to withdraw from the competition.) A few months later, he began to physically transition, a journey that involved hormones, gender-confirming surgery, and countless barriers—including Manuel losing his coaching team and training facility, which refused to work with a transgender boxer.

With the help of Golden Boy Promotions, Manuel was able to finally get licensed to box as a man in 2016, after the International Olympic Committee ruled that trans male athletes were allowed to compete without restrictions in the Rio Olympics.

Since then, Manuel has run into issues with cisgender male boxers refusing to fight against him, but Aguilar wasn't phased when he learned his opponent was trans.

“For me it’s very respectable,” Aguilar told The Times in Spanish. “It doesn’t change anything for me. In the ring he wants to win and I want to win too.

When asked about his plans after his historic win, Manuel said he plans to take some time off to enjoy the holidays. Then, he just wants to keep fighting.

“I've got some naysayers in here," Manuel said, referencing boos from the audience in a video interview after the match. "I need to prove that I deserve to be in here as well."
