Patti LaBelle: I Have to Slap Mariah Carey Every Now and Then

Even Carey needs some tough love once in a while.

Legendary entertainer Patti LaBelle feels it’s her responsibility to reach back and nurture the younger divas and divas-in-training. One particular star LaBelle has had to bless with her hands is Mariah Carey, she says.

“Mariah’s my goddaughter,” LaBelle told Busy Philipps on her late show Busy Tonight. “I have to slap her every now and then, but she’s so phenomenal and so good, she doesn’t need to be slapped anymore. That’s my baby.”

The 74-year-old performer didn’t specify why she had to give Carey some tough love, but LaBelle says she’s been a mentor to many “young ladies” including Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige. The original “Lady Marmalade” singer says she often encourages the girls to button up.

“I hate saying this but, keep your clothes on. That talent will show. You don’t have to do this and do that to show that.”
