Pence’s Visit to Ohio Will Be Greeted by a “Big, LGBTQ Dance Party”
When Vice President Mike Pence visits Columbus, Ohio later this week, residents plan to make him feel extra welcomed by throwing a big, queer dance party.
Pence is traveling to Columbus for an event with America First Policies on June 16. Coincidentally, this coincides with Columbus Pride. Many are expected to turn out for the local Pride festivities, taking the opportunity to showcase all that the city has to offer. Friday's main event will also be a Big LGBTQ Dance Party, to which over 600 people have already RSVP'd.
Though Pence has never officially positioned himself as an ally (especially considering his support of moving support from HIV/AIDS to fund conversion therapy, amongst other things), the local community is still ready to give him a warm welcome. As performer Kelly Coate puts it: "He's not coming to us, so we need to come to him...showing we're Americans just like everyone else and we want equal, fair treatment."
The party is expected to take place outside of the hotel where Pence is staying. Event organizer Jay Smith spoke with local news about the event, saying: "I want this entire street over here filled with rainbow and dancing. That is what I'm hoping to see."
