"Penny Dreadful" Is Showtime's Sickening New Horror Series: WATCH

Penny Dreadful

The witchy bitches of American Horror Story: Coven have some competition heading their way: On the heels of Lifetime's trailer for Lizzie Borden comes a teaser for  Showtime's new horror series, Penny Dreadful, which looks to steal the blood-soaked crown for small screen scares.

While the clips (below) reveal little, according to Fangoria, it's kind of a horror-lit mashup with everyone from Dracula to Frankenstein in a macabre twist on League of Extraordinary Gentlemen:

The show aims to weave together classic macabre characters like Dorian Gray, Dr. Frankenstein and more, into one horror stew ... The first visual teasers have debuted and the latest finds Eva Green under demonic influence, unwittingly praying to an upside down cross.

Writer John Logan and director Sam Mendes (who previously teamed on Skyfall) are producing the series, while the first two episodes will be directed by The Orphanage’s J.A. Bayona. Green plays the series’ haunted heroine, Vanessa Ives.

In January, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said that the tone of the ensemble series will be “very realistic and very grounded, not Bela Lugosi. All exist in human form in turn-of-century London.”

We're holding out hopes for a Dracula/Dorian Gray hookup.

Penny Dreadful premieres in spring 2014.
