Last year’s sudden death of George Michael was a shock to music lovers around the world, and now fans like the contestants of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 are honoring the singer by recreating one of his most iconic videos.
Peppermint enlisted the help of singer-producer Ari Gold to help with the video for the cover of Michael’s 1992 song, “Too Funky,” that features all of the Season 9 queens sashaying down the runway like Linda Evangelista, Tyra Banks and Julie Newmar did in the original video.
“George Michael remained a chart-topping artist and an absolute inspiration to me and many queer people during a time when being openly gay was a career killer,” Peppermint told Billboard. “It’s likely the public would have rejected him had he come out in the ’80s and instead he had them dancing, celebrating, and even singing along to lyrics about the life & love of a queer man.”
“Though the original ’Too Funky’ video can never be replaced, I always wanted to live out my fantasy of being one of the supermodels he had on the runway and now I get a chance to share this moment with my season 9 RuPaul’s Drag Race sisters.”
The original version used a snippet of Anne Bancroft from The Graduate asking: “I am not trying to seduce you… would you like me to seduce you?” This time around Cynthia Lee Fontaine has taken over for Mrs. Robinson, asking the question in both English and Spanish.
