The Times has pointed to Adam Lambert as the first openly gay mainstream pop artist in the U.S., but before that he started out as a mere contestant on the FOX show, American Idol. Though he finished as a runner-up on the eighth season, he became hugely popular for his theatrical performances that continuously pushed the envelope and impressed the judges. Throughout the competition, there was a lot of speculation concerning his sexuality; after the show was over, he came out as gay in a Rolling Stone interview. He was given a record deal with RCA and his debut album, For Your Entertainment proved to be a smash hit, selling 198,000 copies in its first week in the U.S. He is known for supporting various charities and being an advocate for the LGBT movement.
