Folks lined up in the rain to see Janelle Monae serve up a blisteringly fabulous show at NYC’s Highline Ballroom last night. Why? Because the pop/soul renegade’s showcase for her new album The ArchAndroid was all about old-school/new-fangled onstage drama, musical ferocity and a killer presence by this iconoclastic diva-on-the-rise.
My office-mate Carly attended (and the fantastic Robin Roemer shot the gorgeous pics here). After the jump, get her quick wrap-up on the highlights of the show and the set list. And more stunning photos!
Rooowwwrrrrr! Janelle Monae is giving us major… Well, just majorness.
Some notes from the show…
Janelle Monae is AMAZING live. So much energy and style, her band is sick, and she’s a total badass. She completely rocked the crowd, people were loving her.
Even though it was a rainy, gross night, there was a massive line outside the Highline Ballroom when we arrived.
There was a dance contest for “Tightrope” which was awesome. Audience got to vote on who won; it was super cute.
The crowd = VERY stylish.
Munchy bonus: They were giving out fresh popcorn and cotton candy!
Also, just my personal opinion, but this album, The ArchAndroid is amazing and I feel like it could be a breakout hit this year (I hope! She really deserves it!)
Janelle performed for a while, covering new and old tracks.
Here’s the set list, as I recall…
“Dance or Die”
then a totally bitchin’ guitar interlude
Then Janelle comes back out and sings “Smile” while standing on top of a stool, w/ only guitar accompanying her. Epic.
Er, a song I don’t know… Sorry.
“Lettin’ Go” (I think, I could be wrong, I don’t entirely remember; I was blinded by the fabulousness.)
“Violet Stars Happy Hunting!”
All in all a totally AWESOME night.
And just one more…
