Pinesfest Invades Fire Island This Labor Day Weekend

Drag queens, disco music and Betty Who come together to send off summer.

If you're out on Fire Island over Labor Day weekend, you'll notice a new sight: Pinesfest is a three day festival featuring music, dancing, drag and Betty Who—and it all benefits The Hetrick Martin Institute and Fire Island Pines Seashore Defense Fund.

"What if we married the beach club idea with a music festival idea?" organizer Greg Dyer told Next Magazine. "And we could set it up with food tents and different bands and DJs. What is going to keep people at a Beach Club all day... So that was the inspiration."

Dyer says the entertainment will be diverse, with a strong electronic bent, "because that is what the market wants."

"We have some live bands, Midnight Magic are a nine-piece disco band. Betty Who is headlining Saturday," he adds. "It is meant to appeal to a wide audience."

There's also a bit of retro love, with Robbie Leslie, one of the original Studio 54 DJs, coming in to spin.

Below, check out Pinesfest's three-day schedule.
