We’re all-too accustomed to businesses mistreating LGBT customers, so it’s always worth calling out when a company does right.
A Planet Fitness in Midland, Michigan, received a complaint from a member that there was a “man” in the women’s locker room. In actuality, it was a trans woman using the facilities, but Yvette Cormier didn’t really care.
“I was stunned and shocked. He looked like a man—he did not look like a woman,” she told WNEM. “This is very unprofessional. This is very scary.”
But rather than indulge Cormier’s bigotry, the front desk explained that the woman had every right to be there. Not willing to take that for an answer, Cormier went to Planet Fitness’ corporate offices, but they responded similarly.
“They told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that’s the sex he wants to be,” says Cormier.
“Planet Fitness is committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members,” the company said in a statement. “Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity.”
Cormier started complaining to other members, so PF revoked her membership for being such an insensitive asshat. Well, they said it much more politely:
“In expressing her concerns about the policy, the member in question exhibited behavior that club management deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled.”
