Transgender Woman at Center of Planet Fitness Locker Room Issue Speaks Out

"I had to step out and say something because I'm not going to be made into a monster."

The transgender woman who was confronted by a cisgender woman in a Planet Fitness locker room in Leesburg, Florida is speaking out publicly for the first time, saying she won't let herself be "made into a monster."

The woman who complained of the trans woman's presence in the women's locker room, who wished to remain anonymous, had her membership revoked for breaking the gym's "judgement free zone" policy. The woman said she was not judging, but felt her rights were being violated when she came upon transgender woman Ivey Gardner in the locker room.

Gardner said she has been traumatized by the experience, and learned her former name was publicized in a demand letter sent to the company by the other woman's attorneys, the far-right Christian group Liberty Counsel.

"She told me I looked like a clown," Gardner told WFTV9. "She told me I looked like a man and I need to stop trying to appear as a woman."

Gardner also said there were other parts of the locker room she could have gone to, and noted how she felt unsafe due to how Cormier was behaving. A spokesperson for Planet Fitness said its locker rooms all contain private changing areas.

“She may feel uncomfortable, but I feel like my life's in danger anytime someone approaches me like that," Gardner said. She added that she was thankful for how the gym handled the situation.

She said she was sorry Cormier was uncomfortable, but continued, "I definitely feel like she could have handled it better."
