Plant lovers, rejoice: Plant Kween is here to help you tend to your green gurlz with pride.

Brooklyn-based botanist Christopher Griffin is best known for their mega-popular @PlantKween Instagram account, where they share helpful how-tos about all things house plants. The Assistant Director of New York University’s LGBTQ+ Center by day, Griffin uses the account to cultivate their passion for gardening and show off their glamorous ‘fits. It’s the ideal outlet for the infectiously smiley Black queer and nonbinary activist, who loves connecting with fellow queer and trans hortiphiles on social media and has amassed a community of nearly 370,000 followers.

Griffin’s passion for plants comes from their grandmother, who they describe as “the Plant Kween.” She, too, loved gardening and instilled in them a deep respect for the natural world.

“She taught me a lot, not only about how to care for plants, but how to care for myself as a young child,” they tell Logo. “And that was really powerful, especially as a Black queer nonbinary person, getting that so early on — experiencing that love that liberated me to float and experiment and explore myself in a multitude of ways.

In addition to their social media stardom, Griffin became a published author earlier this year. Their debut book, You Grow, Gurl!: Plant Kween’s Lush Guide to Growing Your Garden, hit shelves in March. It’s a project Griffin is “truly proud” to share with the world.

“It is a guide to not only growing your indoor garden, but doing it in a way that is therapeutic with ease — no anxiety, playful, campy, wonderful photos,” they share. “It’s very colorful, very me. It came out the day before my 33rd birthday. I never thought that I’d write a book, but yeah, she's an author!”
