Sony is set to remake 1996 supernatural teen thriller The Craft with up-and-coming director Leigh Janiak and one of the film's original producers, Doug Wick, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The original starred Robin Tunney, a natural witch, who befriends Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell and Rachel True, a group of wannabe witches who end up growing apart once one of them begins using her powers for evil.

Janiak will pen the script with Phil Graziadei, who also helped write Honeymoon, Janiak's breakthrough horror film that debuted at SXSW last year. Janiak also directed an upcoming episode of the new MTV series, "Scream."

THR adds:

The news of a female director coming on board to direct a female-centric feature project is welcome news to Hollywood, as it breaks after the studios have come under fire from the American Civil Liberties Union for "systemic failure to hire women directors at all levels of the film and television industry.” Janiak's hiring was already weeks in the works; the filmmaker impressed execs with her take on a female empowerment tale.

Manon, we invoke thee! Please make sure this remake doesn't suck!
