Police Investigate Cause Of Fire That Destroyed Popular Houston Gay Bar

The club's owner said his new sprinkler system should have been turned on by the city already.

Customers and staff spending Saturday afternoon at The Eagle, a popular gay bar in Houston's Montrose neighborhood, were sent running from the building after it was engulfed in flames.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire and whether it was intentional, but patrons inside the bar told KHOU they saw a "flicker of lights" right before the fire broke out.

"There was a flicker of lights and then all of a sudden I smelled the smoke, turned around to my friend, said 'It smells likes something's burning,'" said customer John Trujillo. "That's when the manager ran out and before you know it, the rest of us took off and we noticed all the smoke coming out of the roof."

No one was injured in the fire, which took dozens of firefighters hours to put out.

The Eagle was fairly new to the neighborhood, having replaced 611, a bar that was there previously.

Owner Jay Allen (below) told ABC 13 he recently spent half a million dollars renovating the club, which included a new "state of the art" sprinkler system, before it opened. Unfortunately, his new sprinkler system was not yet turned on by the time the fire broke out.

"We've got the entire sprinkler system, or the majority of the sprinkler system in," he said, indicating that he'll be rebuilding the club immediately. "We were just waiting for city approval for the water sewer tap and they've got all the paperwork and it should have been done already."

On Facebook, the bar revealed it will be temporarily relocating back to its original location, and will be open on Sundays until new renovations are complete.

Allen assured neighborhood locals, who've grown to love the new bar staff and are concerned about their sudden unemployment, that everyone will be taken care of.

"Fortunately they are kind of a big family and I wouldn't be surprised to see every last one of them out here on Monday morning scrubbing and cleaning to get this place back together again," he said of his employees.
