D.C. Cops Joke About Burglary Victim's Sexuality: "He's Probably Gay"

"We’ve got police out here, dancing in my home and acting as if this is a joke and this is serious. This is my life.”

Police in D.C. responded to a burglary earlier this month, but instead of solving the crime they focused on deducing the victim's sexual orientation.

On August 8, two officers responded to a burglary at the Southeast D.C. home of Clarence Williams. Williams was out of town at the time, but when he reviewed his surveillance video he found the cops making jokes and speculating about his sexuality.

“Armani, Dolce and Gabbana—he’s probably gay,” one officer can be heard saying. A few minutes later, the other officer dances.

“We’ve got police out here, dancing in my home and acting as if this is a joke, and this is serious," Williams told NBC 4. "This is my life." He lost clothes, shoes and a computer in the break-in, his second in two months.

Williams says the officers' attitude has left him feeling "disillusioned."

Police initially knocked on the front door, but left after receiving no response. They returned nearly eight hours later when a neighbor reported a broken back door.

"When there is an alarm going off on someone's house, you don't just knock on the front door," Williams said. You check the back door too." He added that the cops told his neighbor, 'Well what do you expect. You live in Southeast.'"

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department said the officers are under investigation.

"Their behavior is not representative of the 'We are Here to Help' environment we work tirelessly to uphold... We remain committed to providing positive interactions with all and hold the trust of the community in high regards."
