Politician Ben Carson Says Prisons Prove Being Gay Is A Choice

Republican presidential hopeful and neurosurgeon Ben Carson recently offered up a few deliciously ignorant soundbites on the subject of homosexuality to CNN. Ignoring almost centuries worth of scientific, psychological, anthropological, and sociological research on the subject of human sexuality, Carson has proclaimed that being gay is a choice and he knows this because many people “go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay.”

Sure. I mean, that’s not how that works at all. But sure! Of course a right-wing neurosurgeon would say that.

The comment was made in the context of a discussion about LGBT rights in an interview with Chris Cuomo. Here’s the full quote:

Cuomo: Do you think being gay is a choice?

Carson: Absolutely. Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.

Cuomo feebly attempts to argue against Carson (“There’s a whole theory of dominance…”) but when literally every syllable spoken by the smug GOPer is guided by willful ignorance, what’s even the point?!

Look, we don’t need to even try and refute this kind of logic. If Carson doesn’t understand the very basic concept of prison sexuality that’s his problem, and there’s no reason for us to stoop to his level to make valid points about the importance of basic civil liberties. Nor is it even salient here to discuss the importance of human rights for LGBT individuals whether or not homosexuality or gender identity is biologically determined. So let’s just skip it! This guy’s an idiot!

Anyway, here’s the video of the interview if you need to get your blood pressure raised for some kind of obscure medical reason.
