Porn Studio NakedSword Wants To Be The Netflix Of Indie LGBT Cinema

"Hardcore is everywhere, but films that deal with sex and sexuality in a frank manner are much harder to find.," says founder Tim Valenti. "We’re in a unique position to change that."

As the line between mainstream film and porn continues to blur, one adult-movie company is aiming to be the go-to studio for indie LGBT movies.

This month NakedSword launched an independent film division, NakedSword Film Works (NSFW for short), intended to acquire works from queer filmmakers addressing sex and sexuality.

Unlike NakedSword's usual fare, the company said in a statement, "NSFW films do not need to have explicit sex, or even nudity, only further the conversation about gay sex."

With amateur porn pushing out established studios, NakedSword was eager to branch out. "We wanted to get back to the original sense of adult,” says I Want Your Love producer Jack Shamama, who is curating films with NewFest programmer Adam Baran. "Not in the explicit sense, though we don’t shy away from that, but as something complex and and mature and interesting."

NakedSword garnered attention—and critical praise—in 2012, when it produced Travis Mathews I Want Your Love, a serious (and explicit) examination of gay sex and relationships in modern-day San Francisco.

NSFW has already debuted Rob Aquino’s acclaimed Catharis, and Hattie Goes Cruising, a documentary about a 70-year old African-American gay man.

The first original NSFW production, 100 Boyfriends Mixtape, a semi-autobiographical film from queer performance artist Brontez Purnell, is now live on the site.

"We have a large, engaged audience hungry for creative original stories." said NakedSword founder Tim Valenti, "Hardcore is everywhere, but films that deal with sex and sexuality in a frank manner are much harder to find. Most distributors find sexual subjects difficult to handle, and we’re in a unique position to change that."
