Preppy Is The New Black: The '80s Yuppie Style Is Back In A Big Way

preppy back

Preppy is all around this summer, from the streets to the runway (check out Thom Browne's nautical prints). Misfit prepsters dot the small screen on shows like Revenge, Dirty Little Liars and Gossip Girl (R.I.P.). And preppy destinations like Martha's Vineyard and the Hamptons are at full capacity.

Of course it's not exactly a new fad: The 1980s saw not-so-real men eating quiche and poring over the essential Preppy Handbook. Even the prep-school look of the 1950s was a resurrection of the original Eton style from decades past.  "The new preppy is a tweaking of the classic Ivy style." says Patricia Mears, who curated the recent "Ivy Style" exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. "Some of the vocabulary—pink and green, bright and clashing collars are being blended with other styles," including boho, punk and even hip-hop.

This season de rigueur preppy items include bowties, straw hats, repp ties, slip-ons, bare ankles, nautical flourishes and those damn whale-pattern pants. NewNowNext hit the racks to find out where you can get the look.

Check out the new preppy style below

Cricket Sweaters

The sporty pullover gets a modern makeover. Come fall, a cable-knit scarf is a must.

Blue Cotton Two-Button Blazers

Keep it cool and classy into fall with a cotton, two-button blazer. The best thing about these shades of blue is that they will always be in style. So invest in one to wear each year.

Colorful Plaid & Madras Neckwear

Pictured: Brooks Brothers Patch Madras with Deco Slim Tie ($40), Penguin Douglas Plaid Bow Tie ($45), Polo Ralph Lauren Narrow Plaid Madras Tie ($65)

Madras and plaid are not new to prep, but a range of colors are released each season and these give you an eye of your different options. Pair with a solid shirt. (You might want to pick up a diagonal "repp" tie, synonymous with Ivy Leaguers, while you're at it.)

Stripped Polos

Pictured: Tommy Hilfiger Oxford Strip Polo ($52), Polo Ralph Lauren Custom-fit Striped Beach Polo ($45), Brooks Brothers Multistripe Pique Polo ($65)

Wear a solid polo under a stripped one to stand out with a popped collar, but don't go overboard like this. Pair with solid color khakis or shorts to keep the focus on the upper body, but if feeling adventurous, choose a patterned bottom like the ones below.

Nautical And Patterned Khaki Shorts

Pictured: Polo Ralph Lauren Greenwich Embroidered Short ($70), Vineyard Vines School Of Fish Embroidered Club Shorts ($98), Tommy Hilfiger Custom Fit Sailboat Printed Short ($50)

Have more fun than the basic bitch prepsters with a patterned pair of shorts based on the sea-life such as sailboats or fishy friends.

Blue Boat Shoes & Slip-ons

Pictured: Eastland Men's Yarmouth Limited Edition Camp Moc Slip On ($120), ECCO 'Androw' Boat Shoe ($100), Sperry Top-sider Cloud Logo Authentic Original Corduroy 2-Eye Boat Shoe ($85)

If you end up sticking with the solids, and go sans a bright neckwear piece, don't you dare pair with boring tan, brown boat shoe or mocs. Spice up the look with a bright shoe like the different shades of blue above.
