President George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush, Rushed To Hospital
Former President George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush have both been hospitalized. The 92-year-old ex-president was admitted to the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital, suffering from "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia," according to a rep.
Bush was sedated for a procedure to clear his airway, and is reportedly stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation. Former First Lady Barbara Bush, 91, was also admitted to Houston Methodist this morning, suffering from fatigue and coughing.
President Obama indicated in his final presidential press conference this afternoon that he had been in touch with the Bushes about the former First Family.
"They have not only dedicated their lives to this country, for Michelle and me over the years. They are as fine a couple as we know and so we want to send our prayers and our love to them. Really good people."
George Herbert Walker Bush met Barbara Pierce when he was 17 and she was 16. The two wed on January 6, 1945, just weeks after his return from fighting in the Pacific. They spawned a political dynasty, with eldest son George Walker Bush, 70, serving as the 43rd president of the United States and John Ellis "Jeb" Bush, 63, elected governor of Florida in 1999.
They are also parents to sons Neil, 61, and Marvin, 60, and daughter Dorothy, 57. Another daughter, Pauline, died of leukemia at age 4 in 1953.
