New Children’s Book Traces The Origins Of The Rainbow Pride Flag

Teach the children!

Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag will introduce kids to LGBT advocates Harvey Milk and Gilbert Baker, and teach the history behind the beloved pride symbol. Written by Florida-based author Rob Sanders and illustrated by New York-based artist Steven Salerno, the book is slated for release on April 10, 2018.

It will feature full-color illustrations and total 40 pages in length.

Pride will open during Milk’s early life growing up in suburban New York and follow through to his election into office in California during the late ’70s, when he became the first openly gay elected official in the state’s history.

In 1974, Milk met Baker. The two collaborated to devise a symbol for the LGBT movement, and the iconic rainbow flag was the result of their work. The first rainbow flag flew during a San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978.
