Saturday's GLAAD Media Awards Ceremony

The 19th annual GLAAD media awards were held in Hollywood on Saturday, and the the event was impressively heavy on star power.  The ceremony was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, but Kathy Griffin opened the show — during her act she invited her mother onstage to quiz her about her knowledge of the LGBT community.

The biggest award of the evening, the Vanguard Award, was given to Janet Jackson. Said Jackson in her acceptance speech, "To everyone at GLAAD and everyone in this room, I would just like to say that I hope I can always walk worthy of this award that I have both in my hand and my heart."

Luke MacFarlane of Brothers & Sisters Comes Out Publicly as Gay

Lukemcfarlanegay

-- Brian Juergens from AfterElton.com

Canadian actor Luke MacFarlane, who plays the character of Scotty on Brothers & Sisters, has come out in an interview with the Canadian Globe and Mail. Regarding his decision to come out after years of speculation in the press regarding his sexuality, Macfarlane comments:

"I don't know what will happen professionally ... that is the fear, but I guess I can't really be concerned about what will happen, because it's my truth. ... There is this desire in L.A. to wonder who you are and what's been blaring for me for the last three years is how can I be most authentic to myself - so this is the first time I am speaking about it in this way."

Moby Wishes More People Were Like Us

Moby_gay

-- snicks from AfterElton.com

Brandon Voss has a terrific interview with Moby in the upcoming issue of The Advocate. Moby has always been one of the biggest gay allies in pop music, even after his very public feud with Eminem in 2001, in which the rapper called him a "36 year old baldheaded fag". In the interview, Moby talks about why he would love to have gay children..

You’ve been such an ally to the gay community that you’ve taken some heat for it -- like when you stated in an interview that gays were “superior to straight people.” Do you stand by that?

Yeah, and I also said that if and when I ever have children, I want gay children, which didn’t really endear me to the Christian right wing of America. There are a lot of people in the world who are virulently homophobic or misogynistic or anti-Semitic, and what baffles me is that if you just look at it empirically, gays, women, and Jews are certainly responsible for far fewer violent crimes than straight white guys. They’ve started fewer wars, and they tend to be well educated, fun to hang out with, and they have nice homes, bars, and restaurants.

He also discusses his own sexuality, and the sexual experimentation he's done..

Oh, Snap! GLAAD Media Awards in NYC Red Carpet Pictures!

Mariska_hargitay_cheyenne_jackson

This past week, West Coast-ers played host for the HRC Gala, but last night, not to be outdone, New York welcomed its own wonderfully pro-gay event: the 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - one of them, anyway. And it was a pretty ... attractive evening, judging from these red carpet photos.

Here we have Law & Order's Mariska Hargitay and Xanadu on Broadway's Cheyenne Jackson. I hope Mariska is asking if she can touch Cheyenne's rippling thighs. I mean, that's what I would do if I ever met him...

Oh, Snap! Gay Celebrities Come Out for HRC Gala in L.A.!

Joe_solmonese_anne_hathaway

The Human Rights Campaign Gala in Los Angeles played host to lovely gay and gay-loving celebrities Saturday - including Anne Hathaway, here with HRC president, Joe Solmonese. As if The Devil Wears Prada and her open love for her gay brother didn't give Anne enough gay cred - check out Queerty's interview with Anne Hathaway. She comments on that hateful Sally Kern and her first exposure to anti-gay sentiments...

"...around middle school, when people start throwing around things like 'Gay,' or 'You’re so gay' or 'You’re a faggot.' And I remember not understanding what they were trying to say by that and being weirded out by people who would say things like that. I would always speak up and people would usually tell me to 'lighten up,' but I still don’t think that’s the right attitude to take.

Crazy-Sexy Pictures from NYC Go-Go Tribute to Gay Nightlife!

Lost Boys creator/photographer, Russian-born Slava Mogutin, is back with his second monograph - and if these pictures are any indication, it's just as raunchy and wonderful as his debut. Who wouldn't want this on their coffee table?

Courtesy of publisher powerHouse, we got a few select pics from the upcoming NYC Go-Go, which depicts the shrinking gay party scene in downtown New York with shots from The Cock, Mr. Black and Boysroom. Yikes! I hope this kind of nightlife isn't dead.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka Are Gay Person's Choice

You may have already popped over to the main page to read the highly-anticipated results of the First Annual AfterElton.com Gay People's Choice Awards Poll and Pizza Party Jamboree. And if you haven't, I'm going to spoil something for you: young Hollywood's Alpha Gay couple, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, did not take the top spot in the Favorite Gay Couple category.

Now, I'm not going to tell you who DID win, so you'll have to look for yourself. But if the above photo, taken recently at a party in New York City, is any indication, Harris and Burtka are one another's first prize.

Seriously, how adorable is that? (Thanks to WoW Report for posting the pic, photo credit to flaneur foto)

GQ: Elton John, David Furnish & Ian McKellen: Britain's Most Powerful Men

Eltonjohn

-- Lyle Masaki from AfterElton.com

For the second year, the British edition of GQ magazine has listed Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish on their list of the most powerful men in Britain. The high profile couple are ranked at number 30 on the list and are the only case where two men share an entry. (Last year the couple shared the number 40 spot.)

This year's issue boasts a couple more gay men new to the list. Sir Ian McKellen comes in at number 98, while Spencer Livermore, Pink News' most powerful gay man in British politics, debuts at number 84.

Vanessa Williams Is HRC's Biggest Straight Ally

On February 23rd the Human Rights Campaign will hold their big annual NY fundraising dinner (“Gala 2008”), and they’ll be honoring the lovely Vanessa Williams with this year’s “Ally For Equality” Award.

I’m a big fan of Vanessa and certainly don’t begrudge her the honor, but it seems like the recipient of this annual HRC award is always a big name celebrity who’s appearance at the fundraiser helps to sell tickets. (Last year’s recipient was Matthew Broderick.)

Colin Farrell To Be Best Man at Brother's Gay Wedding

Alright, this is really sweet: actor Colin Farrell (who played bisexual in A Home at the End of the World, gay-ish in Alexander, and was "discovered" by Joel Schumacher, make of that what you will) will be playing the role of Best Man when his brother, dance teacher Eamon Farrell, weds his boyfriend Steven Mannion. The brothers (Eamon is the elder) are apparently quite close and Colin reportedly helped his big bro pick out the wedding ring.

My my my, what is going on Down Under with all these gay guys in entertainment coming out willy-nilly?!

Recently the lead singer of alternative rock band Faker, Nathan Hudson, spoke about his sexuality for the first time to a magazine, noting:

“My association with being gay was that it was bad and dark and not good for you. I had trouble finding people to look up to ... I’m happy to talk about being gay for that kid in the suburbs who’s 15 and scared.”

Documentary on Gay, Black Civil Rights Leader Bayard Rustin on LOGO

Br

Tomorrow night, LOGO will air the film Brother Outsider; the documentary presents the life of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin. Despite his critical role in the fight for black equality in the U.S. and his close work with Martin Luther King, Jr., Rustin never became a well-known historical figure. Why the "outsider" status? Sadly, it was because Rustin was openly gay.

Project Runway's Dragtastic Chris March

If you've been watching Project Runway this season, chances are you're a fan of Chris March. He may not be a front-runner to win, but the NYC costume designer's sweet nature and winning personality have made him an audience favorite.  (The occasional f*g joke notwithstanding.) Chris was actually voted offof PR early on, but the producers brought him back when Jack Mackenroth fell ill and had to drop out.

Radar's "Gay For Pay" Gayest Ads Collection

Well, thanks to Radar's upcoming issue, there are many more penis-joke ads where that came from! Pro-Gay and Just Gay Moments in America's Next Top Model History

Gaymarriageshoot_2

First off, I'm calling out Cycle 9 of America's Next Top Model (you know the finale airs tonight, right?) for not being gay enough. This is not the show I signed up for! Tyra, what are you doing? The Jays are not enough!

OK, Cycle 9-not-included (this shot is from the previous season), it's safe to say, where there's Top Model, there's gay-ness...from photo shoots, to cameos, to panel, to the girls themselves...and as nuts as Tyra is, I love her for bringing gays to such a wide audience (and not I'm not just talking about making Miss Jay a judge, 'cause you know no one else wanted that to happen).

So, let's take a look back (yup, I go all the way back to Season 1; I'm a Top Model expert - heeey) at some of the gayest moments in a very gay show, starting with...

Tila Explains Things to Tyra

Ae1

-- scribegrrrl from AfterEllen.com

Last week, Tila Tequila was a guest on The Tyra Banks Show (thanks to Queerty for the tip). The episode discussed bisexuality generally, supposedly in an attempt to enlighten and educate.

But Tyra's own attitude seems far less than enlightened. Maybe Tila Tequila isn't the ideal representative for bisexuals — not that one person could ever represent such a diverse group —  but she definitely seems cooler than Tyra in this video. (Warning: Tila has a shrieky laugh. This could be painful if you're wearing headphones.)

Gay Pride, Retro Style!

Aelt1

-- Adam Lubitow from AfterElton.com

I have a confession to make: I’ve never been to a single gay pride event. And, due to my being in elementary school at the time, I never got to truly take advantage of living in the 80s, in all their gnarly, neon-colored glory.

But luckily for people like me, AfterElton reader Alan Light was kind (and brave) enough to share his extensive collection of photos of Los Angeles Pride from that period (the years 1987 , '88, '90, '91, '93, and '95 to be specific) and they're fabulous. If these photos teach us anything, it's that even gay men were not immune to terrible 80s fashion. Judging from these photos, the official uniform of gay pride was moussed hair, short shorts, and a fanny pack.

I wonder if it says something about our culture that while the look of the spectators has evolved over the years, the parade itself hasn't changed a bit. We've included a few more choice snaps after the break.

Jonny McGovern Gays Up Rock Music with Rock Band!

Jonny and Team Pimp got down with new music party game, Rock Band...even though some members were skeptical at first: Check this clip of Jonny convincing Team Pimp to stay in and play. (It was a tough sell. You know Miss Maxine does not stay in on Thanksgiving!) Jonny even had a peace pipe on hand in case of a "tranny fight." 'Cause those can get ugly, for real!

British Celebs Give New Meaning to "Pocket Gays"

Aelt1

-- Brian Juergens from AfterElton.com

A new project aimed to provide positive gay role models for British teens compiles tips from Sir Ian McKellen, Doctor Who creator Russell T Davies, former NBA'er John Amaechi, The Gossip's Beth Ditto and more on topics ranging from dealing with bullies to entrepreneurship.

The pocket-sized resource guide is meant to inspire gay youths to overcome stigma and achieve personal and financial success and to embrace their sexuality as a unique trait rather than view it as a barrier to their goals. Aptly titled LGF's Inspirational Guide for Young LGB People (LGF is Manchester-based charity the Lesbian and Gay Forum), the resource will no doubt become the Bartlett's Familiar Quotations of the gay gum-snapper set.

Considering how precocious I was as a teen already, I think with this guide's added power I would have morphed into a white-hot supernova of pure moxie. Count your blessings, Mom and Dad!

Gay Men Are Either Not Sexy Enough or Alive Enough for 2007

Aelt1_2

-- Brian Juergens from AfterElton.com

People announced its "Sexiest Man Alive" online today (the issue hits newsstands Friday), and sadly there were no gay celebs in its list of 15 hunks. Still, a few AfterElton.com Hot 100-ers, including Ryan Reynolds and Johnny Depp, made the list, which was topped by the usually boyish Matt Damon (I say "usually" because he actually looks like he hasn't slept or had water for a week in the photo spread).

Considering the gays that popped up in the 100 Sexy Men in a Minute feature and Perry Moore's recent snagging of the title of Sexy Man of the Week, this is a bit of a disappointment, but we'll get over it. After all, we've got our own stable of studs to keep us company, right?

Vote for the 2007 Gay Blogger of the Year!

Aelt1

-- Adam Lubitow from AfterElton.com

Competition has begun at the 2007 Gay Bloggies, where twelve gay bloggers compete for top prizes of cash and porn (and really, what more could any gay man ask for?). So far, it's loads of fun and I love the creative aspect of the competition. What sets this contest apart from other blog awards is that, unlike those other contests which simply tally votes, the finalists are required to write new posts about an assigned topic each week. Visitors are then asked to vote "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down" on each post. The blogger with the least amount of "thumbs-up" votes each week is voted off, Survivor-style.

Last week the bloggers were given the task of introducing themselves, but the real competition begins this week. The first topic was to "confess something that you've never written on your blog" and some of the responses are pretty fantastic. It's still early in the competition, but now that all the entries are up, I have to say that right now I'm partial to Dan Renzi of "How Was Your Day, Dan?" and my discovery of the week, Craig of "Puntabulous". He's totally adorkable and the only blogger of the bunch I don't already read on a regular basis who actually inspired me to start visiting his site.

Voting is going on right now, so head over to the site and make sure that your favorites stick around for the next round!

The East Village: NYC's Other Historic Gay 'Hood

360x373_arpadonstmarks_2
Arpad brings a bit of old school macho to the gentrified shops of St. Mark's Place. And yes, that is a CBGB boutique in the background. Oy...  Photos by Richard J. Rothstein.

As usual this past Pride Week, there was lots of reflection about the Stonewall riots and the history of the gay movement in New York's West Village. Which is as it should be... But the blocks surrounding Christopher Street aren't the only chunks of the Big Apple steeped in queer folklore. On the other side of downtown, NYC's East Village boasts its own legendary gay past.

Esteemed writer Richard Rothstein of QueerSighted has put together a pretty fierce stroll down memory lane through the streets of this always cool neighborhood, and reveals the amazing gay places that used to be. Follow in the footsteps of Warhol, Ginsberg and old-school drag pioneers, and find out where circuit parties were born, where the notorious bathhouses were, and where queers and punks started revolutions that still influence our culture today.

Plus, Rothstein included some beefy pics to keep you clicking. Well done!

Pride Soundtrack: "Crazy in Love," Jackie Warner & That Madonna-Britney Kiss

Favorite Pride Dance Jam: Beyonce's "Crazy in Love"

It actually took me a minute to think of this one. I knew I needed to "get in the mood" of being in a gay club...a few long-islands, a fog machine, lots of eye-sex and casual fondling. What would make me want to dance in this setting?

Oh! Beyonce, of course. And I think Beyonce’s gayest, or at least most gay-beloved, song would be “Crazy in Love.” I’m not really sure why that is, but I feel like it’s a gay club staple, no?

And Beyonce herself can be wonderfully drag-alicious...

Beyonce174374680_2

Wouldn't you agree?

Just thinking about that "Crazy in Love" intro brings to mind gay guys doing a catwalk on the dance floor, and, personally, I remember being wasted and dancing to this song many times like a complete gay nut job at bars in college (especially that “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, nononono” part).

There are actually plenty of songs that make me want to dance while at gay bars just as much as “Crazy in Love” does, but it's the only one the DJ, when I request it, will actually play. For some reason, those DJs will never play Pussycat Dolls! What gives? Beyonce is always cool, though.

My inspiring artist and gay video pick after the jump!
