Prince Dead At 57

The singer and performer known as Prince has been found dead at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota reports TMZ.

Prince-full name Prince Rogers Nelson-had a medical emergency on April 15, forcing his private plane to make an emergency landing in Illinois.

Prince's team told TMZ he had been fighting the flu.

Prince was a prolific musician, releasing 39 studio albums since his debut in 1978. It was his 1984 classic album Purple Rain, released in conjunction with the film of the same name, that earned him two Grammys, an Oscar and cemented his place among the greatest musicians in the world.

In 1993 Prince was not allowed out of his contract with Warner Bros. and therefore changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol, so journalists began to refer to him as "the artist formerly known as Prince." He reverted to the name Prince in 2000 when his contract with Warner Bros. expired. The "1999" singer continued creating music, releasing a new album almost every year, touring, and even playing the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2007. Prince won 7 Grammys and sold over 100 million albums during his career.

The cause of death is unknown at this time.
