Lara Spencer Apologizes for Mocking Prince George’s Love of Ballet

"I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions," the "GMA" host writes.

Host Lara Spencer is dancing around controversial remarks she made Thursday on Good Morning America about Prince George, future King of England.

During a regular segment in which Spencer reports on the "buzziest stories of the day," she seemingly made fun of the six-year-old royal for taking ballet classes.

"Unlike other kids his age, it sounds like the third in line for the throne is in for quite a demanding year," Spencer said of Prince George's back-to-school schedule.

"In addition to the usual first- or second-grade things like math, science, and history, the future King of England will be putting down the Play-Doh to take on religious studies, computer programming, poetry, and ballet, among other things," she continued, pausing to encourage laughter from the studio audience and co-host George Stephanopoulos.

Referring to pictures of Prince George smiling, Spencer joked, "Oh, he looks so happy about the ballet class!"

"Prince William says George absolutely loves ballet," she added, still laughing. "I have news for you, Prince William—we'll see how long that lasts."

Backlash was swift on social media, particularly from the professional dance and theater communities, with angry viewers demanding the GMA hosts apologize for flippantly promoting “toxic masculinity.”

“My sincere apologies for an insensitive comment I made in pop news yesterday,” Spencer wrote Friday on Instagram, disabling comments for that post. “From ballet to anything one wants to explore in life, I say GO FOR IT. I fully believe we should all be free to pursue our passions. Go climb your mountain—and love every minute of it.”

Many commenters are still calling for Spencer to apologize live on GMA. There's also an online petition encouraging the morning show to produce a segment about the benefits of ballet training for young men.
