Prince Harry Meets Justin Trudeau And Our Hearts Just Can't Take It

The handsome political pair met Monday in Toronto to discuss Prince Harry's Invictus Games.

After meeting the President last week, Prince Harry traveled to Canada to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to announce the launch of the 2017 Invictus Games, which are set to be held in Toronto.

The pair met Monday night to discuss the Paralympic-style multi-sport event in which over 600 wounded, injured or sick army service personnel from 16 nations compete in a variety of sporting events. The first games were held in the UK in 2014 with the second edition occurring later this month in Orlando.

Before his meeting with the Prime Minister, the prince spoke to an audience of injured military personnel at the Royal York Hotel, where he explained how he was inspired to get involved with the Invictus Games.

For the prince, the pivotal moment occurred in 2008 when he was returning home after his first tour of duty in Afghanistan. On the plane, he saw three British soldiers who had sustained major and transformative injuries after serving in the war.

"Once in the air, I stuck my head through the curtain to see three British soldiers...laid out on stretchers in induced comas; all three were wrapped in plastic, missing limbs with tubes coming out of them everywhere," he began.

"This visceral image was something I’d never prepared myself for and had only heard of. It struck me that this flight was just one of many, carrying home men and women whose lives would be changed forever, and some who had made the ultimate sacrifice."

Four years later, Prince Harry would see wounded soldiers competing at a sports event in Colorado, which motivated him to create his own international competition focused on emboldening injured veterans.

"Seeing so many men and women competing against each other with huge beaming smiles made me realize how powerful this concept was," said Harry. "Sport is what made the difference. Sport could help these guys fix their lives and those around them."

Later, Prince Harry met Prime Minister Trudeau at an official press event. There, the Prime Minister spoke to the importance of the competition and acknowledged the prince's "extraordinary leadership...around the Invictus Games."

"This is a moment for us to recognize the extraordinary strength and resilience of those who choose to serve their country," he continued. "We're very, very glad to be part of it."

In addition to their meeting, the political duo also attended a sledge hockey game together, a sport that Prince Harry has chosen to add to the Toronto games in a nod to its importance to Canadian culture.
