Principal In California Confiscates Male Student's Elsa Costume

Students at Ethan Chase Middle School were encouraged to dress up like Disney characters for Spirit Day.

A principal in Menifee, California, ordered a 13-year-old to remove his "Elsa" costume on Thursday, even though students were encouraged to dress like Disney characters for Spirit Day.

Austin Lacey says he chose to dress up like the star of Frozen just for fun. "I'm one of those people who loves to go all-out," he told KTLA.

But while his classmates loved it—asking him to pose for Selfies—school administrators were hot under the color, claiming it was a "disruption." Lacey had to change outifts and the costume was reportedly confiscated.

"This action was taken in accordance with district policies," said Romoland School District superintendent Julie Vitale. "At no time was there an indication that the student was expressing any particular message. ... The Principal's action was based upon the need to stop a general disruption to the school environment."

Vitale said the district "prides itself on having policies and practices that support all students regardless of gender identity or gender expression."

But Austin's mom, Brooke Francev, says he was told "the principal does not believe that boys should be dressed like girls."

"I can’t believe that there are still people out there that hold those beliefs," she added, "especially on a day when it was all intended in good fun. It really shouldn’t have been an issue."

The name of the official who called for Lacey's outfit to be removed has not been released, but according to the school's website, the principal at Ethan Chase is Chris Hernandez.
