Batwoman Is Getting Her Own Show on the CW

Casting has already begun for a lesbian actress to take the role.

Lesbian superhero Batwoman has been in the news quite a bit recently. Earlier this year, we learned that she would be making her small-screen debut during the Arrowverse crossover. But at this year's San Diego Comic-Con the network revealed she's about to get more screen time than just the special: Batwoman will be getting her own television show on the CW.

As Deadline reports, the network wanted to focus on a powerful female hero and, so, already has the show in production for 2019. As the report states, Batwoman will be "an out lesbian 'armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind,'” The show is expected to take on a gritty tone, similar to Arrow and the Batwoman comics, and the show's pitch reads for a promising execution of that:

Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

The project is being helmed by Greg Berlanti and The Vampire Diaries executive producer Caroline Dries. Casting calls for the show seek a "lesbian actress of open ethnicity" for the title character.

If this comes to fruition, Batwoman will be making history as the first gay lead (of any gender) for a live-action superhero series.
