Bracelets, Book-Burning And Polyamory In First Trailer For "Professor Marston And The Wonder Women"

Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall, and Bella Heathcoate star in a new biopic about Wonder Woman's creator and the women in his life.

With Wonder Woman the summer's biggest box office smash, the timing couldn't be better for Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, a new film detailing the creation of the world's most famous super-heroine.

Out actor Luke Evans plays Wonder Woman's creator, Professor William Marston, who had an unconventional family life—Marston was engaged in a polyamorous relationship with his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their partner, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcoate).

The three raised their children together and Elizabeth and Olive influenced Marston's depiction of Diana, down to Olive's jewelry inspiring the Amazon's iconic bracelets.

Connie Britton co-stars as Josette Frank, a children's author who bemoans the "violence, torture, and sadomasochism" included in "every issue" of Wonder Woman. (The film also depicts the backlash Wonder Woman and other comic books faced at the hands of conservative crusaders.)

Though America is riding high on Wonder Woman, out director Angela Robinson (The L Word, True Blood) has been trying to get the film made for the better part of a decade.

“It’s weirdly an accident of history that they’re coming in the same year,” she told EW. “I’ve been trying to get the film together, like all indies movies, for a while. It came together a couple times and fell apart a couple times. Then, it just started gathering steam, but the actual stars aligning in the way for this type of timing just kind of happened.”

Besides Evans and Robinson, there's quite a bit of queer talent behind Professor Marston and The Wonder Women: The film is being produced by Annapurna Pictures, which is run by lesbian producer Megan Ellison (20th Century Women, Detroit).

From the trailer below, it looks to be just as arresting as DC Comics' summer blockbuster, but with a different kind of action.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women hits theaters on October 27.
