Prominent Indian Doctor Commits Suicide, Blames Her Closeted Husband: "You Took My Happiness"

The suicide of a prominent doctor in Delhi, India, has raised awareness about the number of gay men in the country who marry women.

Priya Vedi, a 31-year-old doctor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, was found dead in a hotel room on April 18 with her wrists slashed. In a shocking Facebook message, Vedi described the "mental torture" she felt her husband, Kamal Vedi, was putting her through, as he pursued relationships with men while their marriage went unconsummated.

According to family members, the Vedi's marriage was fixed by their parents—Kamal met Priya and consented to the match. She also liked him,” a source recalled.

They'd been been married for five years before her death, but six months in, she found a fake Gmail account her husband was using to chat, share pornography and meet guys.

"I never told this to anyone because I was in love with him—I thought one day everything would be okay," she wrote. Vedi said regardless of his homosexuality, she tried to be there for him as a wife. But her husband's abuse grew stronger. "I loved you a lot and in return you took my happiness—you are not human being, you are a devil."

Before taking her life, Priya Vedi called her father and cried through entire conversation. This was apparently not her first suicide attempt.

The next day, Kamal Vedi was arrested and charged with "cruelty" and "dowry death."

Homosexuality was recently re-criminalized in India, and remains a societal taboo. Many gay men marry heterosexual women to please their families or keep their social standing. With divorce and discussion of marital problems frowned upon, their wives have little or no way to address their unhappiness.
