Queer Reading Material To Pack For Your Next Trip

Three new titles that will transport you before your plane leaves the runway.

Whether you want something to help pass never-ending airport wait times or you simply seek the perfect poolside page turner, here are three exciting new queer reads to throw in your carry-on:

Mouthfeel, Mexico City

Mouthfeel

For its fourth installment, Mouthfeel magazine—the gay, limited-edition print and online magazine that explores local food scenes and the influencers shaping them—explores the major players in Mexico City’s vibrant food and art culture.

The latest issue’s highlights include a profile on Mexico City’s street artists, Arty and Chikle; a guide to the city’s coffee scene with long-time barista Ivan Hernendez; avant-garde artwork; city guides; and a series of erotic portraits of Mexico City’s finest subjects, shot by Christopher Sherman; and, more.

The Diamond Setter

Fareed, a young, handsome foreigner from Damascus, illegally crosses the border into Tel Aviv in order to return an infamous blue diamond to the jeweler who is its rightful owner. As he navigates his new city’s present-day culture, gay nightlife, and active protest movement, he finds himself falling in love with an Israeli soldier. As we follow his journey, we learn the truth behind Fareed’s family’s past and what connects him to the jeweler.

Author, Moshe Sakal, weaves a beautiful, immersive tapestry of a city where differing religions, cultures, and ethnicities collide while he explores the boundaries (both real and idealogical) that separate his rich cast of characters who are looking to love and live freely.

Red As Blue

Drawing on the racism, bullying, and homophobia she encountered in her own youth, writer and poet, Ji Strangeway, spins the tale of 15-year-old, June Lusparian, a Mexican-Armenian teen struggling to make sense of everything—her life, her sexuality, and her future—as she meets and falls for Beverly, the coolest girl in school.

Strangeway’s engaging prose and illustrator Juan Fleites’s beautiful artwork bring to life Paradise, the fictional 1980s Colorado desert town where the part-movie-script-part-graphic-novel is set, and the budding relationship June finds herself in just as her world is about to explode.
