9 LGBTQ Celebrities Who Can't Drive

"You're a Virgo who can't drive."

Is there any truth to the enduring stereotype that queer people can't drive?

I can't say for sure, although I can attest that at least three of Logo's editorial team members fall under that description. As one of those aforementioned non-drivers myself, I feel the need to assert that I do, in fact, have my learner's permit. Literally, I can drive; but, in the interest of saving money on car insurance, I never obtained my driver's license and don't own a motor vehicle. I also live in Brooklyn, so it's not a dealbreaker, and I'm 23, so I've convinced myself it's part of my personality now.

Not unlike Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, however, I couldn't help but wonder if this phenomenon of queer people who can't drive extended beyond the confines of the Logo office. Lo and behold, today's vital piece of hard-hitting investigative journalism: nine LGBTQ celebrities we know and love who don't have their driver's licenses. We did the digging so you don't have to. Drive safe or call an Uber, gays!

Laverne Cox

The Orange Is the New Black alum confirmed in a recent interview on Live With Kelly and Ryan that, nope, she can't drive. She is in the process of getting her license, however. It's been about a year, but we'll give her credit, especially since she wants to get her license to expand the kinds of roles she can audition for. You go, girl!

Trixie Mattel

In a reading of Trixie Mattel's astrological natal chart courtesy of her Trixie and Katya co-host Katya Zamo, Drag Race superfans learned that the All Stars Season 3 winner in a "Virgo who can't drive." As long as you don't count that neon pink Barbie jeep she drove around DragCon...

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs may be a fashion industry veteran, but behind the wheel of his new Porsche, he's a total novice. He's also currently learning to drive, so steer clear of conspicuous luxury vehicles in your local Home Depot parking lot.

Was Billy on the Street actually an elaborate ploy to distract us from the fact that Billy Eichner absolutely cannot and will not drive? The jury's still out.

King Princess

Between dropping hit pop singles and teasing her forthcoming album, the 20-year-old "Pussy Is God" singer occasionally drives boats, but not cars. (Don't Juul and drive, kids.)

Turns out, Eichner is in good company: Fellow out comedian Cole Escola is also a member of the "gays who can't drive" club, according to a 2014 interview with Time Out New York.

The bestselling gay author, essayist, and comedian has made light of the fact that, no, he never learned to drive.

He's also highlighted how not driving can actually be an asset for writers and observationalists. In an interview with DigBoston this April, Sedaris explained that because he can't drive, he never goes on autopilot when in a car. "So I’ll be on the bus, or the subway, or being driven somewhere, and I’ll talk to the driver," he added. "If I were more of an independent person, or more in control, I wouldn’t have those encounters." Touché.

On a press tour for 2015's Paper Towns, actress and model Cara Delevingne revealed that she doesn't drive and, unlike her character in the film, has never been on a road trip. (The British-born actress gets a bit of a pass, though, since driver's tests across the pond are notoriously difficult.)

Hopefully her GF, Pretty Little Liars alum Ashley Benson, has some skills behind the wheel.

Jaboukie Young-White

The comedian, Daily Show correspondent, and Twitter star confirmed on in 2017 that he's gay, so he "personally can't drive." Big mood.
