Queer Comic Emma Willmann Wants You to Know She Isn’t Ellen DeGeneres—or David Spade

She's also not Kate McKinnon.

Some know comedian Emma Willmann from her role as Beth on the CW’s musical dramedy series, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend—where her character and Gabrielle Ruiz’s Valencia Perez coupled up last season. Yet Willmann has her greatest presence and visibility on the stand-up circuit, which made her the perfect candidate for a raucous, rapid-fire 15-minute set on the latest edition of Netflix’s stand-up showcase series, The Comedy Lineup, which premieres Friday, August 31.

The comic, who played herself on HBO’s Judd Apatow-produced comedy about a couch-surfing stand-up seeking a break in NYC, Crashing, also co-hosts the weekly Inside The Closet podcast with fellow queer comic Matteo Lane (he also does a set in The Comedy Lineup). Willman spoke with NewNowNext about her set, the forthcoming final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and her podcast dream guests.

In your set, you mention that you sometimes get mistaken for Ellen DeGeneres.

It ebbs and flows, but it happens. Like when I'm walking down the street, especially in New York, they're like, 'Hey Ellen!' They don't even necessarily know I'm a comedian, too.

Do you ever play along and do the Ellen dance for them?

No, but the first industry person I worked with was a college circuit agent and he said, 'come on, when you go on stage do a little dance!' I was like, no! I really like Ellen. I'm a big fan. She lets other people shine on her show.

Do you ever get mistaken for fellow blonde Kate McKinnon now that her profile is so high?

That's funny you say that. The only ones that say that are gay men. One time Whitney Cummings said it, too. And one time a lesbian casting person said [I looked like] David Spade. She was serious. I was like, OK.

Lots of liberals in entertainment like James Gunn and Sarah Silverman are being doxxed by vengeful, pro-Trump right wingers using old tweets. Are you fearful or excited by the possibility they will comb through your social media and come after you, too?

Here's the thing. I am definitely political by virtue of being me, but I don't engage with conservatives in a hostile way. I'm not saying anything poignant about any type of policy or politics. There's a guy who got kicked out of a show I was doing in the East Village who was all yelling, 'Trump Trump Trump!' I played around with him a little bit and when he was getting kicked out he was like, 'I like that little Ellen one!' and then I waved at him. I haven't had an abrasive experience with those people, yet. I'm open to being doxxed, though.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend kicks off its final season in October, and I hear that Beth is back. What can you tell us about it?

Beth is back, but I haven't seen any scripts so I don't know their relationship status. I'm really curious to see where it goes.

Would you like it if she got a big death scene?

Oh my god, I would be open to anything. I'd be totally down. I would love to see how Beth would handle extreme situations. Like death.

Who is on your dream guest list for the podcast?

Demi Lovato right now. I'm a big fan and support her so much. Or Nick Carter. Or Aaron Carter. Or maybe Tom Cruise or Channing Tatum. I love Channing Tatum. He's so fun and I love watching him.

Would you be where Ellen is now if you had just done the dance years ago?

Next time you see me I'm going to be dancing around. I might fuck it up, so they’re like, what’s she doing?
