Queer DJ Arca Releases Eerie, Sensual Video For "Soichiro"

The song is the first single off his upcoming album, "Mutant."

Alejandro Ghersi, better known as Arca, has evolved from a little-known Venezuelan DJ to the golden child of intelligent dance music in just a few years. After releasing his first experimental EPs Stretch 1 and Stretch 2 in 2012, he quickly went on to work with FKA twigs, Kanye West and Bjork.

The 25-year-old producer caused quite a scandal in IDM last year with a revealing Fader cover story.

"I knew from a very, very early age that I was gay, although in the social environment in Venezuela, you don’t ever let that be known,” he shared, admitting he was fully prepared to never come out.

"I just imagined myself marrying and just playing that role, I think. I remember praying for it to stop. I prayed that I would become straight.”

It took coming to New York for college for him to come to terms with his sexuality, but he's never looked back—wearing stage outfits that frequently blur gender lines.

Now 25 and living in London, Arca's dropped a new track, "Soichiro," in anticipation of his second full-length LP, Mutant.

The song's title is taken from the middle name of visual artist Jesse Kanda, a frequent collaborator. (Arca was actually banned from Instagram earlier this year because he posted Kanda's artwork for his single, "Vanity.")

The video, shot by Kanda, shows a blurry blue scene of Arca writhing shirtless before we're sporadically plunged into absolute darkness. Moody is an understatement.
