Jexi

Although Joker director Todd Phillips says he left comedy due to “woke culture” and a fear of offending audiences, his Hangover screenwriters Jon Lucas and Scott Moore didn’t. Now they've whipped up a Her-ish high-concept satire about Phil (Adam DeVine), a smartphone-addicted pop-culture website employee whose Siri-like A.I. app (voiced by Rose Byrne) helps him get a life but turns intrusive and inescapable. Look out for Wanda Sykes as the computer store salesperson Phil turns to for help. (Opens October 11, Lionsgate)

DVD and VOD

The Ice King

Way before Johnny Weir, British Olympic figure skater John Curry left a rainbow trail behind him on the ice, coming out on the night of his gold medal win at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics. Director James Erskine revisits the life and career of this LGBTQ sports trailblazer through a trove of rare footage and material highlighting his victories, struggles (specifically, with intense depression and, later, HIV/AIDS), and perfectionism. Brush up on some history, henny! (Available now on DVD, Film Movement)

TV and Streaming

All American

The CW and its gay super-producer Greg Berlanti (Love Simon, the Arrowverse, Riverdale) is making LGBTQ television happen, y’all. This sports-themed series developed and produced by Berlanti’s husband, Robbie Rogers, is about a young NFL recruit, Spencer (Daniel Ezra), whose lesbian bestie, “Coop” (Bre-Z), negotiates a homophobic family and girl crushes. In Season 2, Coop has moved past her family problems, is in a good place with her girlfriend Patience (Chelsea Tavares), and is pursuing her dream career in music. Alas, there's a twist coming her way… (Streaming now on CWTV.com)

Black Lightning

Berlanti strikes again, this time with his non-Arrowverse, DC Comics–inspired series about a black superhero family. Season 3 changes things up a bit by having Black Lightning, a.k.a Jefferson Piece (Cress Williams), and his wife Lynn (Christine Adams) blackmailed, imprisoned, and separated from their lesbian daughter Anissa, a.k.a. Thunder (Nafessa Williams). Thunder ends up adopting a new identity to help everyone break free. (Streaming now on CWTV.com)

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

The third, eight-episode season of this 1920s Australia-set series based on Kerry Greenwood’s novels—and starring The Babadook’s Essie Davis as heiress-turned-detective Phryne Fisher—features the return of her lesbian bestie, Dr. Mac (Tammy Macintosh), and at least one queer victim. (Streaming now on Acorn TV)

Rhythm + Flow

Although many have already canceled her, Cardi B serves as a judge on Netflix’s hip-hop foray into music competition shows, which includes gay contestant Cakes Da Killa, previously seen in the 2014 documentary No Homo. Episodes drop in three weekly batches, so you can jump right to the first week’s second ep to see Cakes in action and watch Cardi make the deciding vote of “yes, homo” or “no, homo.” (Premieres October 9 on Netflix)

Riverdale

Tackling the loss of Luke Perry, who played Fred’s (KJ Apa) father but passed away last year, Season 4 will also reportedly spell trouble for lesbian couple Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Toni (Vanessa Morgan), otherwise known as "Choni." The former is keeping her brother’s dead body in her basement, of which Toni is not aware, and Cheryl’s efforts to contact his spirit will result in replies from a very different party… (Premieres October 9 on The CW)

The Read With Kid Fury and Crissle

With a staggering 85 million listeners worldwide, 6-year-old queer podcast The Read gets a talk show–style TV adaptation, with hosts Kid Fury and Crissle West spilling tea and throwing shade on all things pop and black culture. It’s gonna be hunty fun, so pull up a seat, bitch! (Premieres October 11 on Fuse)
