Police in Washington, D.C., are investigating the possibility of a hate crime after an issue of a local LGBTQ magazine was found hanging by a noose in the street.

According to The Washington Post, officers responded to a call late last month when a copy of Tagg magazine was found hanging by a noose on a light post in the District's Adams Morgan neighborhood. PoPville, a D.C. community blog, first reported on the incident.

According to its website, Tagg’s mission is “to spotlight lesbian, queer, transgender, and bisexual individuals across the country, as well as bring our community together.” A police spokesperson confirmed to The Post that the hanging is currently being investigated as a "suspected hate crime."

In a statement responding to the incident, Editor-in-Chief Eboné F. Bell noted that magazine in question was a copy of the annual "Enterprising Women" issue.

"A noose symbolizes years of hate and the death of thousands of Black people in this country," Bell wrote. "As a Black lesbian, this incident is more than disturbing. I believe there is a reason Tagg was a target, and I believe there is a reason the 'Enterprising Women' issue with people of color on the cover was a target.”

"It’s clearly hate,” Bell added in a statement to The Post. “We just don’t know if it’s racism, homophobia, or misogyny.”
