Queer Pop Star Sizzy Rocket Brilliantly Covers Perfume Genius' "Queen"

"Bitch I know you're tired, and you're broke, but, God damn, you're resilient."

Last year Perfume Genius's psychedelic pop song "Queen" was hailed by critics for its bravery as much as its catchiness. The video, featuring singer Mike Hadreas in full face, was also warmly received.

Now, upstart rocker Sizzy Rocket is taking on the challenge of covering the modern-day queer classic.

Sizzy's version of "Queen" switches out Hadreas' '70s synthesizers for moody piano soundscapes, but the vocals are just as earnest and powerful as the original.

"When I first heard the song I started sobbing," Rocket told us. "I was living on a mattress on the floor of my friend’s apartment in Clinton Hill and I didn't have any money. I was scared of myself—of being queer, of being powerful, of being graceful."

"But romance, poise, and glamour come completely from the inside," she adds. "It's about how you carry yourself."

For her, the song is something of a psychic pep talk. "It's me talking to myself saying, 'Bitch I know you're tired, and you're broke, but God damn, you're resilient.'”
