In Theaters

Consequences

Slovenia’s first LGBTQ narrative feature explores toxic machismo and homophobia in its tale of a troubled, repressed, devilishly handsome 18-year-old delinquent, Andrej (Matej Zemlič), who’s ordered to stay at a youth detention center. There he feels sexual sparks with an even more disturbed and possibly sociopathic ruffian, Zele (Timon Šturbej). Slay is the last thing you want these guys to do. (Now playing, Uncork’d Entertainment)

DVD and VOD

45 Days Away From You

After a breakup with his boyfriend of eight years and a subsequent rebound, 20-something Brazilian Rafael (Rafael de Bona) decides to forget romance and reconnect with friends living abroad in England, Portugal, and Argentina. Writer-director Rafael Gomes’ dramedy was reportedly inspired by his own experiences. Rack up those miles, girl. (Available August 6 on DVD, Dekkoo)

Before Stonewall

June’s Stonewall 50th anniversary was also an occasion for a whole lot of essential cinematic rereleases (The Queen! Paris Is Burning!). Get your dose of history with a newly restored version of this 1984 documentary, which charts the USA’s LGBTQ rights movement through interviews with legends like Audre Lorde, Allen Ginsberg, Harry Hay, and more. (Available August 6 on DVD, First Run Features)

The Devil’s Playground

A 1976 Australian classic that went on to spawn a scandalous 2014 TV miniseries sequel starring Toni Collette, The Devil’s Playground spotlights a 1950s Catholic seminary boiling over with repressed sexuality. Fred Schepisi’s remastered, semi-autobiographical drama revolves around a 13-year-old, Tom (Simon Burke), who finds the seminary’s brothers a little too obsessed with their bodies and sinning, while fielding advances from another student with raging hormones. When will the church learn it needs fewer hallelujahs and more halleloos? (Available August 6 on DVD, Artsploitation Films)

Halston

As Liza Minnelli will tell you—seriously, call her anytime!—Halston was one of the reigning 1970s NYC fashion designers. Tracing his innovations (hot pants—sorry, not sorry), Studio 54 antics, and corporate clashes, director Frédéric Tcheng (Dior and I) revisits the enigmatic figure’s ascent from all-American Iowan to international icon. (Available August 6 on DVD, Passion River)

TV and Streaming

Another Life

When an alien craft arrives on Earth, a group of astronauts led by Niko Breckinridge (Battlestar Galactica’s Katee Sackhoff) takes to the stars to figure out where it came from. However, what flew under the radar before this 10-episode sci-fi series landed on Netflix last week is fierce nonbinary Filipinx-Australian actor JayR Tinaco as the crew’s gender nonconforming medical officer, Zayn Petrossian, whose pronouns of choice are "ze" and "hir." Beam us up, henny! (Streaming now on Netflix)

Dear White People

Justin Simien’s woke AF dramedy about black students at a fictional Ivy League university gets queerer than ever in its third season, with the continued exploits of gay media student Lionel Higgins (DeRon Horton), new guest star Laverne Cox, and a Queer Eye parody in which a sassy expert criticizes the hoods and robes in a KKK member’s closet: “Hunty, it’s Labor Day—what are you doing with all this white?” (Streaming now on Netflix)

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

The queered-up reboot of the 1980s animated series enters its third season, promising more Catra, Adora, and Scorpia drama—who knows, maybe we'll even get a full-fledged love triangle. And all of it will lead to one big pressing question: Which character to cosplay at the next Comic-Con? (Streaming now on Netflix)
