This weekend’s gay TV picks include the debut of NBC’s new gay-inclusive drama Kings, the return of Graham Norton’s hilarious chat show and Swoosie Kurtz’s Desperate Housewives arrival.
And be sure to join us on Sunday night as we host Viewing Parties for Brothers & Sisters and The Amazing Race. The Brothers & Sisters Viewing Party will follow the East Coast airing for the show, so join us starting at 10PM Eastern/7PM Pacific while The Amazing Race Viewing Party will follow the West Coast airing of the show, starting at 11PM Eastern/8PM Pacific.
The View (ABC) Check local listings
It’s a Walker family day at The View with Sally Field and Calista Flockhart stopping by to chat while Matthew Rhys gives a tour of the Brothers & Sisters set.
Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) 10:00 PM EDT
This week’s guests include potty-mouthed, gay-friendly comedian Sarah Silverman … considering the way the media has focused on Jon Stewart’s takedown of CNBC (including Jim Cramer) so much this week, I expect it’ll come up in the discussion. And, as a Comedy Central/Logo star, I expect Silverman to back Stewart up.
The Garden (Sundance) 2:00 AM EDT
Since this week it looks like Logo isn’t airing a Real Momentum documentary (unless there’s something I need to know about D.E.B.S.) and my weekends feel a little lacking without a gay-themed doc, perhaps this look at the lives of male hustlers in Tel Aviv will fill the gap.
The Graham Norton Show (BBC America) 10:00 PM EDT
The popular UK comedian returns for his fifth season tonight with (what I believe is) his first royal guest, Sarah Ferguson (the Dutchess of York), and returning guest comedian Ed Byrne.
Kings’ Ian McShane and Chris Egan
Kings (NBC) 8:00 PM EDT
NBC’s new drama is a reimagining of the story of the Biblical King Saul with Deadwood’s Ian McShane as the ruler of a modern kingdom whose rebellious son is rescued by a citizen who doesn’t realize how much it will change his life. Kings also includes a gay character, though if you haven’t been spoiled on that I’ll let it stay that way (it is revealed in the second half of the two-hour premiere). It’s certainly gotten its share of solid reviews (at least from the reviews I care about), though I’m wondering if the alternate universe setting will work.
The Amazing Race (CBS) 8:00 PM EDT
The Race takes a second leg in Siberia where racers have to take a winter jog in their "bare essentials" … which does leave me momentarily regretting that both buff guys are already out of the race. I’m probably most excited to see Team Deaf(gay) interacting with Team Supergay as Mike suggests Luke might create the archetype for the "sinister deaf kid".
Beltway Unbuckled (History) 8:00 PM EDT
If an alternate present-day monarchy or global adventure isn’t for you, the History Channel takes a look at some of the incidents of American history that should have been sex scandals if only they had been better known. Among the historical figures mentioned are self-hating closet-case J. Edgar Hoover, so there may be some gay content.
Shameless (Sundance) 9:00 PM EDT
While the "why do they bother" love triangle of Frank, Monica and Norma rages on (sigh), Ian has to face the fact that Lip still has issues with homophobia when he unknowingly flirts with a transgender woman.
Desperate Housewives (ABC) 9:00 PM EDT
Yet another gay-fave shows up in the lives of the women of Wisteria Lane tonight when Swoosie Kurtz plays one of Susan’s new co-workers at her school job. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that she gets along with Susan as well as househusband Lee did.
The Walker boys hit the beach
Brothers & Sisters (ABC) 10:00 PM EDT
It’s a Walker brother getaway this week as Kevin and Justin take Tommy away to forget about his troubles. I’m guessing that, based on some of the spoilers I’ve heard, this would be the trip where Keven stands up Scotty for their nookie appointment.
United States of Tara (Showtime) 10:00 PM EDT
With every other member of the family focusing on their own issues, Marshall (Kier Gilchrist) gets to see his own love life take a few step forward, as he shares a kiss with Jason.
