This weekend’s gay TV includes a celebration of The Simpsons’ long-running history, the return of HBO’s Big Love and a meeting of Graham Norton and Robert Downey Jr.
It all starts with a new episode of Shameless, with Ian taking on a rivalry with sister-in-law Mandy.
Shameless (Sundance) 10:00 PM EST
It’s Ian versus Mandy when a cute fireman saves the Gallagher household from a gas leak. If this were any other show, I’d scoff at the idea of yet another show doing the ’gay guy fights with a straight woman over a guy’ plot, but if any show can make that tired plot work, it’s Shameless.
The Graham Norton Show (BBC America) 10:00 PM EST
Graham returns with Robert Downey Jr., comedian Ed Byrne and Pop Idol champion Will Young. I hope this is another instance where Downey talks about sexual tension between Holmes and Watson, I expect Graham’s reaction would be entertaining, to say the least.
The Wanda Sykes Show (Fox) 11:00 PM EST
Wanda returns with her first show of the new year. Since the reaction to the pants-on-fire bomber has been pretty infuriating, I’m feeling overdue to hear her comment on the story.
The Simpsons (Fox) 8:00 PM EST
As the record-breaking comedy hits its 450th episode, late gay icon Eartha Kitt provides a guest-voice as herself while Anne Hathaway plays the new co-star on Krusty’s show.
The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: In 3-D! On Ice! (Fox) 8:30 PM EST
Morgan Spurlock assembles a tribute to prime time longest-running TV series as it reaches its 20th anniversary. Spurlock takes a look at the comedy’s fans, it’s landmark moments as well as the people behind the show. With a guy like Spurlock at work, it’ll sure be a shame if this special ignores the series’ many gay moments.
The gay men of The Simpsons over the years
Big Love (HBO) 9:00 PM EST
HBO’s bigamy drama returns for a fourth season with promises that this season will see some development for gay Juniper Creek leader and a boyfriend.
The Cleveland Show (Fox) 9:30 PM EST
Fox’s Family Guy spin-off hasn’t shown that it can do a gay joke so far but this week’s episode tries to court gay viewers with Jane Lynch and Margaret Cho providing guest-voices. Hopefully, we won’t be questioning their judgment when Monday morning comes around.
Straight Jacket (Logo) 10:00 PM EST
Matt Letscher and Carrie Preston star in this movie about a closeted 1950’s movie idol who makes an unsuspecting studio secretary his beard.
The Worst Cooks in America (Food Network) 10:00 PM EST
This week, the cooks learn some knife skills which, if I remember the lessons from the first season of Top Chef correctly, are best demonstrated by throwing produce into the blender with creative choices of herbs.
Brothers & Sisters (ABC) 10:00 PM EST
While there’s no mention of what’s up with Kevin and Scotty this week, we do get the still-too-rare Sarah plot as she finds herself drawn to a divorced dad. Undoubtedly, the initial encounter will end up with a Walker family conference call
