Rachel Bryk, Prominent Transgender Game Developer, Commits Suicide

A transgender game developer committed suicide last week by jumping from the George Washington Bridge.  Rachel Bryk, 23, suffered from chronic pain due to rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, and also faced depression.

Bryk had achieved prominence in the game-developer community, creating emulators for Wii and GameCube, including Pucca's Kisses. She also worked on a software project called Dolphin, though she was forced to withdraw from various online forums and sites because of transphobic comments.

Just days before her death, Bryk wrote about her suicidal ideation on ask.fm, and one troll commented, "good riddance"—to which she replied, "Yeah pretty much."

Still, there were many who appreciated her gifts: “No matter what, she was always willing to help anyone," wrote a former colleague. "Of all the devs she was the most helpful on the forums, always pitching in. Dolphin is a smaller place without her.”

Bryk will be missed, within the gaming community and the larger LGBT community alike.
