Rebel Wilson Gets Stereotypical Gay Sidekick in “Isn’t It Romantic” Trailer

Comedian Brandon Scott Jones plays Donny, "setting gay rights back, like, 100 years."

What's a mainstream rom-com without a gay BFF?

The first trailer has been released for Isn’t It Romantic, an upcoming romantic comedy starring Pitch Perfect's Rebel Wilson (shredded on social media after calling herself "the first-ever plus-sized girl to be the star of a romantic comedy") as Natalie, a New York City architect.

Isn't It Romantic/New Line Cinema

"Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady," according to the satire's official synopsis.

In this alternate PG-13 universe, Natalie gets a flamboyant neighbor and friend named Donny, played by out comedian Brandon Scott Jones. His previous film credits include Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Other People, and Don't Think Twice.

Donny is shown in the Isn’t It Romantic trailer doing leg lifts and being generally sassy for the sake of exposition. Is Natalie's rom-com nightmare set in the mid-aughts?

Navigating hilariously unrealistic rom-com tropes, Natalie says, “and now I have a gay sidekick who’s setting gay rights back, like, 100 years.”

Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas), Isn’t It Romantic also stars Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, Betty Gilpin, Tom Ellis, and Liam Hemsworth in a towel. Gay comedian and SNL writer Bowen Yang is credited on IMDb as Donny’s Guy.

The New Line Cinema feature, also rated PG-13, is in theaters February 14, 2019.
