Record Number Of Americans Support Same-Sex Marriage

Just days before the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear opening arguments on watershed marriage-equality cases, a new Washington Post-ABC poll indicates support is at an all-time high, with 61% of Americans supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Only 35% oppose the freedom to marry—nearly a complete reversal from a decade ago, when 59% opposed marriage equality and 39% approved of it.

Not surprisingly, the biggest demographic to embrace equality is Americans under 30, whose support has grown from 57% in 2005 to 78% today.

Even seniors, considered the least supportive of LGBT rights, are coming on board: The poll shows that, among those 65 and over, support for marriage equality has increased from 18% a decade ago to 46% today.

The largest block of opponents to equality are—no shock—Republicans, 60% of whom oppose the freedom to marry.
