Refinery29 Invited New Yorkers To "Wig Out" With RuPaul During Fashion Week

Unbe-WEAVE-able!

Not everyone can get into a New York fashion show, but Refinery29 still wanted civilians to enjoy the New York Fashion Week experience: This past weekend, the public was invited to 29Rooms, a massive collection of interactive installations combining art, kitsch, technology and fashion.

“We wanted to make this very visual immersive environment, and highlight incredible creative talent,” Refinery29 creative director Piera Gelardi told artnet News. It was the second year in a row the website had hosted 29Rooms, moving from Greenpoint to a massive 80,000-square-foot warehouse in Bushwick.

Our favorite room had to be “Wig Out,” a fantasy salon inspired by RuPaul, where visitors could "try on" some of Mama Ru's most hair-raising wigs.

Apparently it was a hit with designer Christian Siriano, too.

And Quantico star Priyanka Chopra.

In “Show Your Pride," artist Kate Moross blanketed a room with "Love Wins” and "Love is Love" in different fonts.

Broad City star Abbi Jacobson, who's also an illustrator, created an interactive drawing "experience" inspired by her upcoming book, Carry This Book. Other installations were curated by Adrian Grenier, Michael Kors, Perrier and Tinashe.

Model Adwoa Aboah, who got people like Cara Delevingne and Tali Lennox to record stories of overcoming obstacles played on telephone receivers hanging from the ceiling. (We don't know what obstacles supermodels face, but we're sure they're hard.)

And designer Nicola Formichetti‘s Nicopanda gave us a ball pit with inflatable panda-bear heads. Just because.

Social media and technology came face-to-face in many installations, with a PHHHOTO photo booth capturing a steady stream of gifs and Google’s Tilt Brush transforming a room "into a digital canvas."
