Mayor Of Reno Apologizes For Flying Rainbow Flag Over City Hall
The mayor of Reno is apologizing for ordering the rainbow flag flown over City Hall on Sunday in place of the American flag. Mayor Hillary Schieve had the LGBT banner briefly hoisted to mark a Pride event in Nevada's capital city.
But after locals and anti-gay activists complained, she quickly took it down.
“The city of Reno honors and respects the men and women who serve our country and we apologize to those we may have offended," the City of Reno said in a statement.
“While we made an error in not flying the American flag along with the pride flag, when we discovered we were not flying both, we immediately returned to flying the American flag."
The administration insists neither Schieve nor the city council was aware the stars and stripes were not flying as well.
In a personal statement, Schieve reiterated she did not ask for the U.S. flag to be taken down.
“It was certainly not the city’s intention to be disrespectful and never should have happened. I will take full responsibility since I represent this city... I am very proud to be an American and we should always support our troops and veterans no matter what.
On a positive note, neither Schieve nor the city seem to regret raising the rainbow flag.
"The City was proud to participate in pride weekend and will continue to celebrate our diverse community.”
