Baptist Church Cancels Funeral For Woman's Son Because He Was Gay: Today In Gay

Tweedie pulled out his phone and began filming the encounter. When the man saw he was being taped, he replied "I said, 'fucking faggot.' You want a picture? Take a picture!" At one point, the man declared "God's law—Leviticus— [says] you should be put to death.

After the showdown, the unnamed miscreant told WILX News 10 he lashed out because of his "religious principles." Tweedie posted the video of the incident on Facebook, adding "We came in here and spent 50 dollars on a meal, only to leave and be harassed... I'm more angry with Collin Reed, the [Fire Mountain] manager. No apology, no remorse.. Nothing. Is this acceptable?"

After Tweedie contacted the restaurant's corporate offices, a statement was posted to the Fire Mountain Facebook  page that  the company "have not and will not ever tolerate such behavior. None of our employees were involved in this issue and our Manager took every and all appropriate actions including calling the police."

A New Jersey family filed suit claiming a new law making it illegal for parents to subject their child to the practice, which has been discredited by every major medical organization, is a violation of their free speech and religion.

“The law does not regulate speech, directly or indirectly, but rather only regulates a mental health procedure performed by licensed counselors or therapists,” wrote Judge Freda Wolfson in her ruling. “Surely it is undisputed that a state has the power to regulate not only medical and mental health treatments deemed harmful, but also those that are ineffective or that are based not on medical or scientific principles but, instead, on pseudoscience.”

So Dr. Sharon Lee of Kansas City has launched a weekly pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) Care clinic to help.

“A lot of people were having difficulty because their doctors did not want to prescribe the medication," says Lee, "Maybe they were unfamiliar with the medication and not comfortable prescribing it."

Fewer than 10,000 prescriptions have been written for Truvada since the FDA approved it to be used for PrEP in July 2012. Could anti-gay stigma or a sex-negative culture be behind these low numbers?

“I’m sure some doctors may have some misgivings for reasons other than familiarity with the drug,” Lee said. “Regardless, I was finding folks whose primary doctors were not willing to provide the medicine and there are probably more of those folks out there.”

The clinic will do extensive testing prior to prescribing the medication and require check-ups every three months for more testing and monitoring for side effects.

More than a dozen fire departments from Long Island responded to the blaze, which is being labeled "suspicious." It hit the undeveloped tract between the Pines and Cherry Grove that's officially known as the Carrington Tract—but commonly called the Meat Rack because of all the cruising that happens there.

Newsday reports the fire started some time after 5:e0pm and was extinguished shortly after 7:30pm.

Fires are a major concern on Fire Island (though not the source of its name): In November 2011, a blaze demolished several buildings in the Pines commmercial area.

WFLA reports that Julie Atwood was informed of the church's decision the day before the funeral for her son, 42-year-old Julion Evans, was to be held.

Atwood was told the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church preaches “against homosexuality” and that it would be “blasphemous” to hold Julion's service. A pastor told Atwood they planned to immediately remove his body from the church and offered no help in finding a new venue.

"It was devastating," she said. "I did feel like he was being denied the dignity of death."

The church apparently learned Evans was gay when his obituary named Kendall Capers, his husband of 17 years, as a survivor and several members complained.

“Based on our preaching of the scripture, we would have been in error to allow the service in our church," New Hope pastor T.W. Jenkins said in a statement. "I’m not trying to condemn anyone’s lifestyle, but at the same time I am a man of God, and I have to stand up for my principles.”

Evans' family was able to find an alternate venue but several mourners were not informed in time and arrived at New Hope instead, missing the funeral.
