Richard E. Grant to Play Drag Mom in “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” Film

The "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" star will tackle a role currently played on stage by Bianca Del Rio.

Everybody's talking about Richard again.

Richard E. Grant, Oscar-nominated for his performance as a gay grifter in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, will star as a legendary drag queen in the forthcoming film adaptation of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Variety reports.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie, the hit London musical based on the 2011 BBC documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16, is about a gay teen in a small English town who wants to attend his high school prom in drag.

Grant will play retired drag queen Hugo, a.k.a. Loco Chanelle, who now owns a boutique where he mentors young Jamie and helps him pick out his first dress. Jamie ultimately inspires Hugo to revive his drag persona.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie features a score by Dan Gillespie Sells, gay lead singer of British rock band The Feeling, with a book and lyrics by Tom MacRae. Director Jonathan Butterell and choreographer Kate Prince will adapt their work for the screen.

The movie musical will also star Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe), Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley), and newcomer Max Harwood as Jamie. Filming begins June 24.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie had its world premiere at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre and subsequently transferred to London's West End in 2017. The production was broadcast live last summer in U.K. movie theaters.

RuPaul's Drag Race winner Bianca Del Rio is currently making her London theater debut as Hugo/Loco in the West End production. Michelle Visage has also performed in the show as Jamie's teacher, Miss Hedge.

"I play an older drag queen that’s in retirement, basically," Bianca told NewNowNext of his role. "He had this big career, but he crashed and burned."

Grant memorably won Best Supporting Male at the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards for his performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me? as Jack Hock, the alcoholic gay man who befriends lesbian literary forger Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) before dying of AIDS-related illness. The veteran Swazi-British actor paid tribute in his acceptance speech to "that generation of men that were wiped out by that disease."
