More Riverdale High Students Come Out as Queer in Archie Comics

Kevin Keller has company.

The CW's Riverdale may be dark and dramatic as ever, but things are getting better in the Archie Comics universe.

To commemorate National Coming Out Day, Archie Comics partnered with It Gets Better Project to create “A Better Universe,” a special series of comic strips celebrating LGBTQ youth, acceptance, and equality.

The series depicts five different coming out scenarios, with various LGBTQ Riverdale High students opening up to the supportive main characters, including Kevin Keller, who made history in 2010 as the first openly gay character in the Archie Comics universe.

In one strip, pink-haired Brian tells Kevin that their pronouns are now "them/they/theirs." In another, a girl introduces the gang to her boyfriend and her girlfriend. Archie is also "honored" when a friend comes out to him as trans.

"At Archie Comics, being inclusive and welcoming is a major part of who we—and Riverdale—are. It's a place where friendship and unity are essential, integral elements," said Archie Comics co-President Alex Segura in a statement. "Archie Comics legend Dan Parent—who introduced Kevin Keller to the world, years ago—was the first and only person for this, and he did an amazing job crafting these meaningful vignettes featuring Archie and his friends at Riverdale High. Like Dan and the It Gets Better Project, we're hopeful that by sharing these short stories we can start to make #ABetterUniverse a reality for today's LGBTQ+ youth, their friends, and families."

"We are honored to be partnering with Archie Comics on National Coming Out Day,” added Brian Wenke, executive director of the It Gets Better Project. “Since our first collaboration around ‘Kevin Keller Day’ in 2013 to celebrate Riverdale’s first openly gay resident, Archie Comics has been a leader in amplifying the It Gets Better message of hope. Integrating positive LGBTQ+ role models throughout all forms of media is an essential ingredient to creating a more understanding and inclusive world for all people."
