More casting news from the producers of Gotham, an upcoming TV series that explores Batman’s hometown before Bruce Wayne donned the cowl: Robin Lord Taylor (Accepted, The Walking Dead) has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, better known as the umbrella-loving villain known as the Penguin.
Southland’s Benjamin McKenzie has already been named for the lead role of Commissioner James Gordon, but The Hollywood Reporter also reports Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice) has been cast as Gotham Police Captain Essen, Sean Pertwee (Elementary) will play as trusty manservant Alfred) and Erin Richards (Being Human) will portray as ER doctor Barbara Kean, a love interest for Gordon.
Previously played by Burgess Meredith (in the 1960s Batman TV show) and Danny DeVito (in Batman Returns) is traditionally depicted as a somewhat pathetic baddie with a penchant for avian-themed crimes. THR reports that, on Gotham, Cobblepot is “a low-level psychopath… who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.”
Other Batman’s rogue gallery are slated to appear on the show—including the Joker, Riddler and Catwoman. “This is not one of the things where you bought a franchise and then none of characters people know,” said Fox entertainment president Kevin Reill.
The Mentalist showrunner Bruno Heller and Nikita producer Danny Cannon will direct and executive produce the Gotham pilot for Warner Bros Television.
