Robin Lord Taylor On Penguin's Very Queer Love Life On "Gotham"

"It's about f*cking time there's more queer representation in 'Batman.' I'm happy to be that person."

This season on Gotham, Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a. the Penguin) revealed his feelings for Edward Nygma (alias the Riddler). The revelation, which doesn't exactly follow comic-book continuity, sparked outrage from some uptight fanboys. But Robin Lord Taylor, who plays Cobblepot, deftly shot down the haters.

"These characters have been a part of Batman for almost a hundred years... It's mythology," he told Newsarama in a recent interview.

"It’s meant to be changed and evolved and reinterpreted in the same way that any sort of mythological story goes through to reflect the times. Honestly, you know, it's about f*cking time there's more queer representation in Batman. I'm happy to be that person."

Alas, Nygma didn't share his fellow bat-foe's feelings and, in the January midseason finale, shot Cobblepot and left him to die in Gotham Harbor. We won't know his ultimate fate until Gotham returns from hiatus next month, but we're pretty sure Taylor isn't leaving the show anytime soon.

While Taylor is mum on what happens next, he definitely doesn't want the Penguin to turn into just a jealous jilted lover.

"The last thing I want for this character is to go into the stereotypical gay-man-gets-spurned-by-his-romantic-interest and decides to kill everybody," he says. "That's boring... it's been done, and it's offensive. I feel good in the sense that I can hold and carry this to make sure the character doesn't go into that offensive route."

Taylor is hesitant to call Cobblepot gay, per se—putting labels on narcissistic homicidal maniacs is always tricky business, but he would like him to find a romantic relationship at some point.

"But at the same time, in this world we've created, love equals betrayal, love equals death and violence," he says

"So, I [also[ don't want him to because of that, but we'll see."

Gotham returns to Fox on April 24.
