How the Gay Sex Scenes in "Rocketman" Made Hollywood History

"If it's an important cultural moment I'm grateful to be part of it."

Rocketman has made Hollywood history because, believe it or not, the new Elton John biopic is the first major studio release to include on-screen gay male sex. The scene features Elton (Taron Egerton) and his manager, John Reid (Richard Madden), in bed together.

"What an honor," Egerton told NewNowNext after hearing that Rocketman made movie history. "If it's an important cultural moment I'm grateful to be part of it." (Gay love stories Brokeback Mountain, Call Me by Your Name, and Moonlight were all released by independent studios or specialty arms of major studios.)

Madden goes onto explain how the sex scene is pivotal to the plot because it's the first time Elton makes love. "What the scene is about is two people being in love and that's what we tried to achieve in the scene, an intimacy between two people," he said.

In a recent interview with Attitude magazine, Egerton went into a little more detail about the filming of the scene, and how he felt Madden's penis on his leg: “We shot a scene where we are both naked on a bed and we are rolling around. I don’t really know how much further we could have gone.”

“In the script, this is the scene of Elton losing his virginity and we wanted to try to do that justice, and also at that point their relationship hasn’t broken down yet,” Egerton explained. “They were falling in love and it’s beautiful because it should be. We didn’t want to play like they were a couple who were eventually going to fall apart, we wanted to play it like two guys in their early twenties who are falling in love and who are incredibly sexually attracted to each other.”
