Róisín Murphy's New Album, "Hairless Toys," Was Inspired By "Paris Is Burning." Listen To The New Single, "Exploitation"

Irish electronic musician Róisín Murphy is streaming her excellent new album, Hairless Toys, at KCRW.com.

Her first new album in eight years, Toys is a smorgasbord of sounds, ranging from deep house and '70s funk to '80s synth and even gospel.

Formerly part of the acclaimed electro act Moloko, Murphy has forged a name for herself as a solo artist in recent years, and garnered a sizable gay following.

She admits, in fact, that gay nightlife has always been an inspiration—Toys' lead single, "Gone Fishing," was written after watching Paris Is Burning, the seminal doc about the vogue-ball scene in New York.

Murphy tells Pitchfork:

The culture was a flamboyant reaction to persecution and disillusionment, and the imagination and bravery of these kids is simply awe-inspiring. I envisioned "Gone Fishing: almost as a song from a Broadway musical version of this story:

The making of one’s own world, a safer world and the creation of a new, better family in music or youth culture is a theme I touch upon elsewhere on my album Hairless Toys.

A vogue-inspired sound can definitely be felt on "Exploitation," the second single off Toys. It offers a woozy, menacing synth repeating over a driving dance beat.
