Celebrated British Stage Comedy About A Trans Man Comes To The U.S.

“Rotterdam” is the first trans-themed play to win an Olivier Award.

Rotterdam, which recently won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for its run last summer in London, will make its stateside premiere this spring as part of the Brits Off Broadway festival.

Gay Times reports that the comedy is the first trans-themed play to win an Olivier, the British equivalent of a Tony.

Set in the Netherlands, the play centers on Fiona, who comes out as trans and begins living as a man named Adrian. His girlfriend Alice, who has only just decided to come out as gay to her parents, is now left to question her identity as a lesbian.

"Gender means such different things to different people—to what degree it's constructed or innate, and even within communities where it's fluid, there's debate," playwright Jon Brittain tells Broadway World. "Rather than trying to put all of that into a play, I've focused on a relationship drama about very specific people."

Anna Martine Freeman stars in Rotterdam as Fiona/Adrian. "I have a deep empathy and connection to my character," she tells the Gay U.K. "I identify as queer and so this play resonates with me on a personal level."

Directed by Donnacadh O’Briain, Rotterdam also features Ed Eales-White, Alice McCarthy, and Ellie Morris, who, like Freeman, are reprising their London roles for the off-Broadway engagement.

“I’ve had a blast exploring gender expression and what it’s like to experience the body as a man versus a woman," Freeman tells the Evening Standard. “Even though the play is dealing with some complex issues about gender and sexuality and identity, it’s also really funny."

Rotterdam begins May 17 and runs through June 10 at 59E59 Theaters in New York.
